EU carbon-neutral in 2050?

Enerdata supports the Ministry for the Ecological and Inclusive Transition in the "EU 2050 Scenarios" project

 

  • The European Commission is preparing a new long-term Energy and Climate framework

In the run-up to the 2019 European elections, the Commission plans to publish an updated Energy Roadmap 2050 proposal by the end of 2018. The previous version (published in 2011) aimed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80-95% compared to 1990 levels, while the new Roadmap could target carbon neutrality by mid-century.

  • The French Ministry for the Ecological and Inclusive Transition (MTES) has launched the "EU 2050 Scenarios" study

In keeping with the European calendar, France is looking to state its position on the degree of ambitiousness of the climate policy to be adopted at European level. Given the challenges and uncertainties related to European energy and climate policy, France's General Directorate for Energy and Climate (DGEC) has just launched the “EU 2050 Scenarios” study to prepare a robust analysis of several quantified scenarios for EU carbon neutrality in 2050.

  • Enerdata leads the consortium selected for this study

Enerdata leads the group of partners selected by the MTES to carry out this multi-sectoral study.

Enerdata will bring its unique experience and expertise in energy-climate scenarios scenario building, notably through the use of the POLES model.

Solagro will gather experts from the agriculture and energy sectors, who will help answer questions and challenges related to food, land use and agriculture, thanks to the MOSUT model.

Seureco-Erasme, specialized in economic analysis and modelling (with the NEMESIS model), will focus on the macroeconomic impacts of the scenarios studied.

  • A “Net Zero Emissions” target for the European Union?

The study will encompass all sectors and all greenhouse gases and allow assessment of whether and under which conditions a "Net Zero Emissions" objective for 2050 is possible at European Union level.

  • Key points of modelling and analysis are:

- Assessment of food use and land use policies - potential for capture by anthropogenic sinks

- Assessment of the burden sharing between countries and sectors

- Role of the international environment, the level of climate ambition in the world, and its consequences on the adoption of low-carbon technologies

- Interactions between

- Interactions between objectives for renewables and those for energy efficiency in a low-carbon Europe

- Consequences for employment, sectoral investments, industrial production and economic growth

The project should provide its findings by spring 2019.
